Want to Become a Better Writer? Become a Better Self-Editor.
Writing and editing are completely different skills, yet they are symbiotic, complementary, intertwined. Writing has its own challenge: getting words on the page. But editing introduces all kinds of other challenges that have to do with getting the right words on the page.
Sometimes this means getting the wrong words off the page and replacing them with better ones words that are more apt.
When you write, you ask yourself questions like:
When you edit, many more questions spring on you:
And answering these question is about as easy as spotting a trail-blaze in a blizzard.
(Not easy at all)

Client Case Study: Scott Britton’s Conscious Accomplishment
Scott and I worked together over several months to revise his draft, focusing on compression. By the end, Scott had cut 25% from his manuscript without cutting a single chapter. We distilled the book to its essence, all while protecting the spirit and voice of his prose.
A Bit About Me and My Editing Philosophy
At nineteen, I self-published my first book (to no acclaim or profit), and I've been writing and editing ever since. My first book project showed me the power of self-editing. I taught myself the theory and technique that leads to cohesive, clear, and concise prose, and I learned to ruthlessly revise.
The best way to become a better writer is to become a better self-editor.
That means learning to see your own writing through the eyes of your reader. It means taking an objective and detached stance on something that you've created, and then doing the humble and noble thing of making it better—bit by bit.
Writers need editors, because writers need feedback from thoughtful readers.
My skill lies in seeing what you're going for and helping you get there. I have no interest in hijacking your work and wedging myself into the chair as your ghostwriter. I have my own writing to do. As your editor, I make suggestions and leave the writing to you.
An editor is a mediator, simultaneously vying for the interests of both the writer and reader.
I want you to accomplish your vision, but I will advocate on the reader's behalf that the journey to your destination be captivating and smooth, well-paced and well-structured. I'll point out all the places I think your reader will stumble and suggest a re-route around those obstacles.
Come to me with your most ambitious project. I'll make sure you get it done and that it's the best thing you've ever written.
Your friend in prose,
Garrett Kincaid
